  Chain Sets

Historically chain sets were a way to join two relatively weak bolts with plate hangers and at the same time provide a smooth ring for abseiling and lowering-off. In most cases modern glue-in bolts have rendered them superfluous. The money spent is generally better invested in providing two good quality lower-offs. They will be stronger, cheaper, more reliable and less intrusive.
However in certain situations chain sets can be useful. They allow the lower- off point to be extended to a better position when the only sound placement is in an awkward situation such as at the back of a ledge. Additionally, on multi-pitch routes they provide multiple clip-in points which, especially if the belay is also an abseil piste, can be highly desirable.


For our chainsets we use tested 8mm long link chain in AISI316 (A4) and each leg of the chainset exceeds the requirements of EN959 with a breaking strain of 2500kg. We DO NOT use weaker chain and expect both legs together to meet this requirement. This allows any point in the chain to be clipped as a fully rated belay.

We batch test all chain before incorporating it in our products and it has a breaking strain of 58kN.

Inline or "V"?
We supply two types of chainset, the inline type and the classic V form, each having their own pro´s and con´s.
The inline type is more economical with the chain connecting the upper bolt to provide a back-up and multiple clip-in points but does not allow extending away from unsound or inconvenient bolt placements.
The V pattern allows extension of the lower-off into a better position and equalises the load on the bolts but is more expensive.

Glue or Bolt-in Inline Chainsets


The most economical way to arrange a two bolt chainset .
We fit normal or our innovative parallel eye bolts/hangers depending on the required orientation of the lower-off point and the number of chain links.
Price for 6mm/8mm rod bolt hangers as for 6mm/8mm bolts.


Please specify the glue-in bolt length required, all the same price up to 150mm or hole diameter for hangers.

Please specify AISI 304 (A2) or AISI 316 (A4) when ordering.

Inline Chainset with 1 or 2 x 10/12mm Wiregate Karabiners

These use 10/12mm rod stainless steel wiregate karabiners. Normal gate karabiners which are effectively hanging upside down and resting on the cliff get jammed with water-borne debris in heavy rain, for this reason we only use wiregates.

For safety we strongly recommend the dual karabiner setup to reduce the chance of unclipping but some customers prefer single. Single karabiners should never be used for top-roping.

On single karabiner inline chainsets the bottom link is cut and welded into the eye of the karabiner.

On double karabiner sets the lower link is replaced with an 8mm rod welded ring.

For 12mm Karabiners add €5.00 per karabiner.

Glue or Bolt-in Vee Chainsets
Equal or unequal length „Vee“, 8mm chain fitted with any of our lower-off points and glue-in bolts/bolt hangers as required. Normal or parallel eye bolts/hangers are fitted depending on the required orientation of the lower-off point and the number of chain links.
For chafe free orientation of the rope the rings and 10mm karabiner require a 8mm joining ring as illustrated.
For longer equal „V“ you require 2 extra links (one per side) or you may specify unequal legs. For each additional link (52mm) add €1,20.

Also available without bolts or hangers for fitting to existing bolts, remove the bolt price from those shown below (and the bolt code from the order no, that is 6B or 8B).
